The Local Area

The White Lund Industrial estate is a heathy mix of retail and industrial business premises well located with direct access to the port of Heysham, the M6 and national rail links. It is the main employment zone in the area. With more funding secured as a result of the new M6 Bay Gateway link road.

The area is one of the most exciting prospects for businesses in the North of England. The area is expected to receive significant funding over the coming years due to its 2 nuclear power stations and plans in place for a third.

The Bay Gateway

The Bay Gateway was one of Lancashire's top priority transport projects. The new road completes the long awaited connection from the Heysham and Morecambe peninsula to Junction 34 of the M6, and consists of a 4.8km dual carriageway with a footpath and cycleway along the entire route. Until being called the Bay Gateway following a public competition to come up with a name for the new road, it was known as the Heysham to M6 Link Road.

The project also involves a fully remodelled junction 34, with new slip roads, a new bridge over the River Lune and a park and ride site with over 650 spaces. The new road provides better access for residents, businesses and tourists to the area.

The new road begins at the junction of the A683/A589 Morecambe Road by Lancaster and Morecambe College. This was previously a roundabout and is now a signalised crossroads.

The road then travels north-east passing over Torrisholme Road, the West Coast Main Line railway and the Lancaster Canal. A new roundabout then provides a junction with the A6, and the new road passes under the A6, which has been raised on a new bridge to allow for this.

Between the A6 and Shefferlands Roundabout (which is to the north of Halton Road and just west of the M6 motorway), the link road passes under Green Lane and Kellet Lane – new bridges have been constructed to take these lanes over the new road.

Shefferlands roundabout is the starting point for the new realigned northbound on slip road. This roundabout provides a link to Halton Road and a link over the River Lune to Caton Road and the other newly aligned motorway slip roads and the park and ride facility. There is already evidence of a serious increase in investment in the area with more and more companies showing new interest.
